Overview

  • When: 7th to 9th July (annually)
  • Where: Shandur Pass, between Chitral and Gilgit
  • Duration: 3 Days

Held every July on the breathtaking Shandur Pass at an altitude of 3,700 meters, the Shandur Polo Festival is one of Pakistan’s most iconic cultural and sporting events. Known as the world’s highest polo ground, Shandur transforms into a battleground of passion and tradition where the fiercest polo rivalry—between the teams of Gilgit and Chitral—is fought on a rugged field surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

This free-style polo, played with minimal rules, is a thrilling spectacle. But the festival isn’t only about the game. Folk dances, music performances, traditional handicraft stalls, bonfires, and local cuisine add vibrancy to this high-altitude cultural celebration. Camping under the stars beside Shandur Lake, with drum beats echoing through the mountains, is a memory like no other.
